Every summer music fans get excited. Not because they don’t have to go to school or because the weather is nice, it’s because music festivals are here! Although some people may go to one or two festivals in the lifetime, for other music fans it’s a lifestyle. It’s the thrill of doing nothing but listening to music, being able to see your favorite bands play and maybe even being introduced to new music you never even knew existed. A good festival combines numerous genres and bands. There must be headliners, but also up-and-coming acts that are trying to make it big. If you haven’t been to a music festival yet this summer, you still have time. Grab your tent, your car, and your friends, and be prepared to have the time of your life.

SXSW (South By Southwest): Austin, TX March 8- March 17

This abbreviation is known all across the festival circuit as a holy mecca for up-and-coming bands. To be able to play SXSW as a new band trying to break into the music scene can catepult you to stardom in a matter of months. Just ask John Mayer who got his start at the 2000 SXSW festival or Icona Pop who performed this year and has enjoyed major success with her smash hit, “I Love It” ever since. Unlike other festivals such as Bonnaroo or Coachella, SXSW doesn’t take place in a field. It takes place in Austin at numerous venues around town showcasing the latest movies and up and coming bands that you need to hear. Every year it continues to grow as more and more people flock to Austin to watch great music and discover new talent. 2013’s lineup included: Haim, a popular trio of sisters that have been taking the festival circuit by storm, Kitten, Torres, Icona Pop, and Savages.
