It’s just been announced that Vin Diesel will be in Soldiers of the Sun, a post-apocalyptic vision of the future where aliens have taken over Mexico. The soldiers sent in to fight them hear rumour of a city of gold the aliens are occupying, so set out to rid the place of the alien occupation – and help themselves to the fabled treasure.
Diesel will be producing the film along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and its hoped that this will be the start of a new major franchise for the actor after the success of the Fast and Furious franchise.
But how will Soldiers of the Sun fare against the number of great alien war movies already out there? Check out this pick of the best and make up your own mind.
Starship Troopers focuses on Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) and his school friends, who sign up to join the military to help with the war against an alien species dubbed ‘Arachnids’, more commonly known as ‘Bugs’. The film shares its title with the Robert A Heinlein book, but isn’t a direct adaptation; many of the writers were unfamiliar with the book and director Paul Verhoeven claims that he couldn’t finish reading it because he found it too dull and depressing.
The book has been criticised for seeming to promote military rule; the film is more of a satire of militarism and facism, deliberately presenting an over the top vision of extreme propaganda and military zeal.
Upon its release, the film divided audiences and critics alike. However, that didn’t prevent it being nominated for a number of awards, including the Academy Award for Visual Effects and it won two Saturn Awards. So far there have been three direct-to-DVD sequels and a remake of Starship Troopers is rumoured to be in the works.
