I should probably explain, for those who may not know, what an Arthurian legend or story is exactly. Think of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and you’ve got it about right. The use of these legends as the theme for artistic work dates back many years. Even the poet Alfred Lord Tennyson’s work The Lady of Shallot comes from these stories, as well as some musical pieces by both classical and rock composers. When it comes to film, though, the subject of King Arthur, his court, and his many exploits have inspired so many movies that a list naturally had to be made. I have a personal interest and love of this subject so researching this list was great fun for me. Here are my final picks, and what is really cool is that the films cross genres and everything from Comedy to Action films and Dramas are covered. I hope you enjoy the list, and I recommend that you watch any of these films you might not have seen as of yet.
#5 – Excalibur (1981)
Director: John Boorman
Writers: Thomas Malory, Rospo Pallenberg
This movie centers entirely around the mysteries and magic of Merlin, Arthur Pendragon’s personal magician. The movie covers all of the events as Merlin helps to unite the Britons around King Arthur’s famous round table in his castle at the center of the city of Camelot. The movie also tells of the famous sword Excalibur, of course, handed up from the Lady of the Lake. This film is somewhat of a classic in its own right and a good start to begin a film study of the legends.
