Movie sequels are often hit or miss, quality-wise. However, that does not stop us from watching them as sequels are big time moneymakers for the studios. A sequel’s built-in fan base, essentially ensures a good box office outing, which makes it all the more frustrating that we have not seen any of these sequels yet.
5. Beetlejuice 2
Immediately after the huge financial success that was Beetlejuice, the studio behind the film practically begged Tim Burton to jump right back in and make another Beetlejuice movie presumably because their money pools were running a little low on hundred dollar bills.
Tim Burton agreed to do the sequel, though he was not particularly thrilled about the project. He wrote a ludicrous script with screenwriter Jonathan Gems where Beetlejuice would travel to Hawaii with the Deets and pretty much engage in the same type of tomfoolery that occurred in the first movie except this time it happens on a beach. The studio loved it and immediately got most of the cast to sign back on to do the film. However, they ran into some copyright issues (the issue being they didn’t own it) and put the movie on the backburner.
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see a Beetlejuice sequel, just not the one described above. It sounds more like the plot to a Jim Varney Ernest movie than Beetlejuice. In that regard there is good news. Word around the Hollywood campfire is that Tim Burton gave Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter scribe, Seth Grahame-Smith, his blessing to move forward on a new script for a Beetlejuice sequel. However, if Michael Keaton does not return this one is a no-go for me.
