Former wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is busy at work on his latest film, Hercules. Brett Ratner’s new movie is an adaptation of the Thracian Wars comic series, with Hercules as a hardened warrior rather than a demi-god.
Hercules is offered a major financial incentive to train the Thracian army and he and his crew accept the job only to discover that there’s a darker motive behind the Thracian monarch’s preparations. Hercules finds himself questioning the wisdom of accepting the job and has to overcome more than just human enemies…
Johnson has built up an impressive body of work ever since he left the ring, but he’s by no means the first former athlete to set his sights on Hollywood. Check out these other famous names that started off as sportsmen.
5. Hulk Hogan
Terry Gene Bollea is better known as Hulk Hogan, an American wrestler who just happens to also be an actor, musician, television personality and businessman. Popular in the ring, he soon found himself in demand by Hollywood and made his film debut in the early 1980s playing Thunderlips in Rocky III.
His performance led to a string of other film appearances, including Mr Nanny, 3 Ninjas: High Noon at Mega Mountain and The Ultimate Weapon. He’s also in demand for cameo roles, due to his distinctive appearance and over the top personality and has appeared as himself in Spy Hard as well as guesting in Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Muppets From Space.
Although he’s still heavily involved in the world of wrestling, Hogan now has a respectable acting career and as well as many television roles, he’s done plenty of voice work as well for series such as Robot Chicken and American Dad!
