Smaug the dragon was always going to be one of the major features of the next movie in the Hobbit trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. It would seem that Peter Jackson is determined to keep the vision of the dragon a secret for as long as possible, waiting for either the trailers or possibly even the film itself to reveal the beast.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits cinemas at the end of this year. But if you can’t wait that long for a glimpse of dragon goodness, check out one of these films featuring dragons.
Based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, Disney’s Mulan features Ming-Na as Mulan and Eddie Murphy as her guardian dragon, Mushu.
Set in ancient China, Fa Mulan is the only child of Fa Zhou. When the call comes out for all families to send a man to fight against the Hun, Mulan dresses as a man and takes her father’s place. When her family realises what she’s done, they pray to their ancestors to protect the girl. The ancestors in turn summon the Great Stone Dragon to watch over Mulan. Unfortunately, the dragon that answers their call isn’t the Great Stone Dragon – he’s a tiny little dragon.
Since Mushu was voiced by Eddie Murphy, it should come as no surprise to find that the character provides comic relief in the story, which Mulan was critically acclaimed and nominated for both Golden Globe and Academy Awards. A direct-to-DVD follow up, Mulan II, was released almost a decade later.
