When it was first released, Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur classic Jurassic Park was a major hit, but it never quite managed to break the $1 billion mark, taking around $970 million at the box office. However, now that it’s enjoyed a 3D rerelease, it’s officially generated over $1 billion and is sitting at number 13 on the list of all time highest grossing films.

Not all lists recognise figures from rereleases when they put together their rankings, but whichever way you look at it, Jurassic Park’s not done too badly and the success of the rerelease, especially in China, means that the fourth in the franchise is even more eagerly anticipated.

However, Jurassic Park IV has got a long way to go if there’s any chance of it breaking into the top five best-selling movies of all time.

5. Iron Man 3

Coming in at number five, Iron Man 3, as its name would suggest, is the third film in the Iron Man franchise. It picks up Tony Stark’s story after the events of The Avengers, seeing him suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after the alien invasion of the earlier film.

Stark (Robert Downey Jnr) becomes obsessed with building a number of Iron Man suits, which causes tension with his girlfriend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). However, when Stark Industries’ security chief Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) is badly injured in a terrorist attack by the Mandarin (Guy Pearce), Stark issues a threat against the Mandarin, who shows how worried he is by destroying Stark’s home, narrowly avoiding killing Dr Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) and Pepper. Stark flies off in one of his new suits but when it runs out of power, he is believed to be dead.

The film rejuvenated the franchise after the poor showing of Iron Man 2 and is the highest grossing film so far this year.
